Research needs in Swedish libraries

The objective of the project was to solicit expert opinion from librarians in all professional sectors in Sweden on a research priorities agenda for the field, as perceived by practitioners.

The Delphi method was selected as a suitable one to establish opinions of the experts chosen by practitioners on the research questions formulated by librarians themselves. The project was funded by the Svensk Biblioteksförening (Swedish Library Association).

A Delphi study was carried out in three stages: the first round questionnaire, the second round modified questionnaire and the workshop.

The study shows that what is considered relevant research mainly depends on the library sector or the respondents. The highest priority is accorded to factors affecting strategic development, followed by the changing roles of libraries in their communities and the impact of library programmes on learning and transferable skills, but the results vary greatly between groups.

The study is now an important foundation for the formulation of research questions and enhanced cooperation.
